Resurgence

Acrylic ink on Sumi-e paper, 24x32cm

Collective exhibition: LANDSCAPES - CICLOS DA PAISAGEM, Porto, 2021

“Resurgence” is a part of a larger series that explores the process of Apperception, a passing of a  threshold into perception, where the self and world come together. “Resurgence” attempts to visually describe the transient state between ignorance and knowledge, an “in-between” space consisting of metaphysical fields.

These fields are constructed by printing multiple overlapping grids, allowing for unique patterns and waves to emerge. From afar, the image appears to be a vast landscape, but up close transforms into abstracted elements.

When I was young, my mother used to tell me that if I dug a hole deep enough, I’d eventually reach the other side. A land where the people’s feet were opposite to ours. Their cities upside down, with the ground as the sky, and the sky as the ground.

Our mirror, our inverse, our antipode.

20,000 kilometers away and 13 hours ahead, this land is of the future, our sunset is their sunrise. As we end our day, they are already beginning the next.

And yet… Like us, their shores are also caressed by the sea, and their river runs strong through their valleys and towns until reaching their Port. Like us, when you look from above, their land abstracts into a dance of man-made lines and natural formations.

Although we are in constant opposition, I can’t help but wonder about all the ways in which we are congruent.

Juna Wesley x Nuno Sarmento

Printing ink / black marker, 24cmx32cm / 30cm x 40xm

Collaboration with Nuno Sarmento, Porto, 2021

The artistic process becomes its own subject.

The collaboration you see here is born from the various phases of the creative process. By combining Juna Wesley’s abstract prints with Nuno Sarmento’s life drawings, this series intends to reproduce the strength and elegance of the gestures that make them real.

Each piece is unique and original. The drawings are made in real time and directly onto the final paper, without previous sketches. Because of this, the movements of the genuine gestures are reregistered, mixing realities and almost becoming them. The handmade prints, equally original, are obtained from a unique process that involves the use of grids and the patterns that they create within their crossings.

The drawings are made from both black marker and black pen. The prints are made from black printing ink. Each piece is made on Sumi-e Japanese Paper, with the dimensions: 24x32cm or 30x40cm.

Apperception Series: I

Linocut prints on transparent paper, 42 x 59.4cm, 2021

Apperception Series I is a visual description of the process of ignorance to perception. The passing of the threshold into self-consciousness. It describes a transient state, a metaphysical landscape, between coherent reality and inner experience.
