Recollection is a video piece that was shown in a collective installation at Extéril Foundation in Porto. The piece is based on a family trip to the United States in March 2023, and reflects on the meaning of “motherland” and the generational remembrance that is embedded in American culture and symbolism. Recollection weaves together the unique experiences of each family member into one mnemonic space. The visuals for the piece are composed entirely from one shared digital archive that contained the documentation from the trip. The video is set to an original symphonic soundscape, where lucid images spontaneously surface between elusive forms, symbols, and figures. The piece flickers between the tangible and intangible, revealing the intimate and complex nature of collective remembrance.
Recollection responds to questions about how we record and archive our collective memories in today’s digital age. As technology assumes an increasingly prominent role in retaining our personal experiences, how do we define what is important to remember and what is important to forget?
